WHISTOLOGY

A remarkable whistle is this double ended round that surfaced in the UK. It is probably by Thomas Yates with many of the features used by Yates.

This manufacturer was seen circa 1860 – 80. A catalog with over a hundred different whistles already available was produced in 1870, indicating that they were making quite a few whistles in the 1860s. Many whistles have been found and attributed to him due to manufacturing methods, yet not in that catalog. In other words his company was a prolific manufacturer of whistles.

Therefore we can date this one 1860 to 1880, possibly very early.

It is unusually symmetrical with the round whistle placements, yet the escutcheon for the loop is 10 mm off center itself. The reason is that the longer side is actually longer. The sound is then deeper for that side and higher for the other, creating two different sounds.

It is entirely of brass and the fipple is slanted like Dixon came to known by. It is an unusually long slant at that.

Lastly we note the body seam runs through the window, another trait of Yates. The ring is simple and soldered in a slightly crude way.

This is a mono-typical whistle presently. No single round with this design has been found either. However there may be one or more in private collections. If one is found we will add it to this article for reference.

Quite an unusual whistle with such precise matching opposing round whistles.

93 mm entire length closes out our simple study of a mono-typical whistle.
