HERES A POST THAT NEVER GOT POSTED WHEN SEVERAL ASYLUM WHISTLES SOLD ON AUCTION -SPENDY ONES
things are just crazy with asylum whistles these days. Is it the moon or what ?? Seen on eBay as high as 800 dollars. Just watched another couple go. One was older and went for far cheaper. ( Go figure. Practiaclly the same stamp too !!! )
Yes, there are different dates, at least dates of production, if not actually on the whistle. Earliest would date back to circa 1885. Then there are circa 1890. Lastly circa 1910. Perhaps the material, nickle plated brass, or nickel silver ?? But that doesn't seem to warrant all the lunacy does it ??
With about 100 asylums in the UK, perhaps just plain collectability. Certainly not much else significantly different from each whistle. Not like another design was used. Or not like another country made them. Many haven't even gone to collectors in that country !!! Driving prices through the roof in the process.
All in all, an interesting thing to look for in whistles if one is a stamp collector. But hey, let's face it. The MOST one would find is a limited edition named asylum, also the oldest dated one I guess. But nothing new to whistles really.
Watched a Fire brigade supplier – Shand Mason go by this week … fire brigade…hmmmm….
