110 John Barrall XL Beaufort – Mono-Typical

While some surprises come with research, rarely does a big surprise come in collecting a rare and vintage whistle itself. Presented here is an exception to that rule, a mono-typical exceptionally large Barrall beaufort whistle.

John Barrall is already known as a master whistle manufacturer of the 19th century bringing unique design features to escargots, tube whistles, double tube heavy wall whistles, round whistles and in like manner, he also made excellent beaufort/conical whistles. His tops were unique as we find in his escargots, rounds, and perhaps best known with his beauforts.

Besides simple beauforts, he incorporated unique crafted tops combined with cast brass or ivory mouthpieces, rivaled only by Hudson and perhaps Dixon. However, only J. Barrall added the feature of having the mouthpieces threaded on for removal and cleaning. ( Stevens, did make all-in-one mouthpieces that unscrewed from tube shaped whistles, but made no beaufort type whistles )

Surfacing for the first time, is an extra large beaufort in the same class as the well-known King whistle made by J. Hudson. A stunning example of quality, it measures 95mm and weighs 65 grams. How could a whistle of this stature just now come to light? Apparently, it is quite rare. Was it even a ‘production whistle’ or was it a singular made whistle, perhaps custom made ?? Time will tell.

Another surprising and rare, perhaps unique feature is that the partition wall is stamped with J. B. on one side and perhaps 32 on the other side. The numbers are unclear. Along with this, is that the mouthpiece shape is totally unique for Barrall, short, stubby and almost looking cut off, but solidly attached.

First, examine the solitaire whistle by John Barrall.

Now a comparison of four Barrall whistles.

Graduated sizes of known Barrall whistles, the tops all matching perfectly. Only the ivory MP unscrews, all the rest are solidly attached.

Lastly a comparison to see how large this Barrall beaufort it – monotypic at this point.
