Where did corkscrew whistles originate?
Possibly France may lay claim to this distinction, but at least the Hudson brothers of Birmingham in the UK, has a patent date of late 1870s. James Wilson has an apple corer patented whistle dated 1877. Coney has roundlets whistles dating to 1850s.
There also are possible corkscrew whistles from Argentina, possibly via Germany. Denmark has some examples.
However, the age of corkscrews dates so far back in history and the manufacturing is handmade, rather than productions of any one company, prior to the patents described form the UK.
In affect corkscrews have such a long history themselves, tracing back some handmade or forged models becomes difficult as to where they may have been made.
Suffice it to say that Europe would be the genesis of the corkscrew whistle combination.
How are corkscrew whistles identified?
Although how the whistle is incorporated into the overall tool design is undefined, there has to be a whistle and a corkscrew, even if there are other tools attached in the design. The whistle part may be removable and then closed back into one complete piece.
Corkscrews have been made with horn attached for a handle and then a whistle carved into the horn section, even on canes for walking.
Multi tools incorporate a whistle into the body as well as roundlets that fold and close up the corkscrew. In any event some way to protect the corkscrew tip as well as the person carrying it has to be provided.
Understandably the sleeve protecting each has been lost for one reason or another. This also can be seen when the sleeve is removed and designed to be inserted into a ring on top, so as to be able to twist the corkscrew into the cork.
Why were they made?
Corkscrew whistle combinations were developed for the wine industry of course. Not for manufacturing of wine, but more for the picnic settings, and the needs for calling servants, or calling in general in such a setting.
