selling whistles

don't ya just love the auction format ??

Just place a whistle on eBay for instance. Then to sell it go to a website that hip shoots its postings with guesses and assumptions mixed with realy good whistles and other pretty good research.

Lastly list your item with a wishful guess like —- possibly by Ward. Now it doesn't matter if Ward even made that whistle or stamp cause the word 'possible' has been inserted. You can further protect yourself by saying in the bi-lines that " I am no expert "

Makes selling soooo much easier. Always list it as very rare too. That's always a good selling point don't ya think ???

Periodically I write to the sellers to see what they say for their research—as they many times point out they did internet research. Problem with that is that they don't understand sometimes what is being said on wikipedia !!!!  Worse yet, it was written to promote something else by being tagged or a cited source ——- to drive people to another site.

All in all just muddies up the waters with misinformation. The result ?? People buy for the wrong reasons and then get burned out and don't have any fun. So they quit collecting whistles.

Do your homework….caveat emptor…..

Greed

How many whistles does one need ??

Some think that they can't be satisfied unless they have every one of them.

How about you ??

What if you could afford to pay any amount, would things change in your collecting ??

Are whistles the focus or is it all about ego ??

important rare whistles

what is an important whistle and why talk about it ??

a missing link…

When collecting, the objective is hazy as each one collects what they want to — granted. But for some it is more about whistory. The study of what is behind those whistles. Not always easy to track down is it ?? Perhaps you have visited the Whistle Gallery site just to do so ??

Well, join the hunt !!! So what makes a whistle important and what does that do to the value — and even further, the price ??

First, the importance. It can be weighed by whatever minor detail it brings to the table. For example a stamp that has never been seen before may reveal a manufacturer !!! Or it may be to supply a retailer or police force or ?? Perhaps a model never seen before. And that may open up a door as to other whistles not yet identified.

Then there is the value. — Who knows ?? If another collector spots it and you both want it, then the feathers fly and the price may skyrocket !!!

Notwithstanding, the price may remain very low. Why ?? No one else cares about what you are thinking is soooo important of a connection. But fine by you !! You are collecting and studying for yourself really.

Perhaps that is what being a connoiseur is all about….

whistle repairing

an unusual field of whistle collecting is the obscure pocket of broken and dented whistles that need repair. Why would someone repair a whistle ??

—– It just isn't the same dented or damaged is it ??

Some can be adjusted by hand. Some can be cleaned up and perhaps buffed. Gets the scratches out anyway. The difficulty comes with a polished whistle afterwards !!

Just note the seller on eBay trying to cash in on his pristine whistles and NONE are selling. However if they are very dented then you lose anyway. so why not try ??

Well, the reason is that they fall apart when unsoldered !!! Of course one can get pretty good at disassembling them and then putting them back together. Ya just have to have the motivation is all — kind of gutsy….

However, what if the whistle is very rare and you don't want to take a chance on losing it altogether ???

Well then, that's the rub isn't it ??

celebration of whistles !!

YES !!!

We finally reached 100,000 page loads !!! AND it took only 10 months !!!!!

To celebrate this special milestone we have featured a bonus SPOTLIGHT special edition.

In gratitude of your continued support and interest in rare and antique whistles we are presenting the emergence of a second model by Peter McDonald.

All comments are apprciated, so please feel free to write in. Unfortunately because of 'bots' that spam us to death we had to disable this feature on the website itself. However you can write direct anytime !!!

rare, antique, whistle — milestone !!

well, we are closing in on 100,000 page loads before our one year anniversary of the counter for our website !!!

We set up the counter November 19th last year and have increased readership every way since then.

Great write ins and enquiries. Lots of growth. We have seen some very rare whistles that we would have loved to get !!!!

Oh well… better to see them then not at all !!!!!!

Many articles have been posted. More to come.

What to do to celebrate ?? Something whistle related ??

If by the end of the month we hit 100,000 then how about if we post a special edition SPOTLIGHT —- ——an EXTRA special one ???? Sort of a thank you for coming back time and again.

What could that possibly be ??? >>>> A whistle that has not been seen before ????? Well sure, but that is what the special edition is all about right ??

So how about an even more rare and unknown whistle — something REALLY special ????

OK, it's a deal 🙂

WHISTLE CATALOGS

a shot on the dark…

S.A.French was a supplier of milyary and police equipment prior to the 20th century. So it would seem that it would be a good shot when we came across a catalog dated 1887. — So we ordered it….

Yah, you would think that WOW!! I just found at least one whistle listed that would be revealing ?? NAH !!!!!!

Doesn't work that way at all. It's a shot in the dark really.

You see whatever was offerd at that time MAY be pictured OR be just listed. However other whistles that came later — even one year later are not to be found till you find THOSE catalogs !!! Argh !!!

So there goes another 15 dollars out the window. Why you ask ?? becaaaaaaause, all that was in that catalog was two BGI whistles and a Hudson Metropolitan from the UK.

Nothing about a rare and unusual escargot 🙂

Caveat emptor

whistle snobbery

What if ??

What if you come across a rarely seen, but newer whistle or even older one for that matter. What if it has some unusual manufacturing, even somewhat unique characteristics?

BUT it isn't old OR of the quality of your 'other' whistles, or it looks old and ratty ??

Would you pick it up ?? Or pass it up ?? ARE YOU A WHISTLE SNOB ??

I guess it all depends of how much of a student of whistlery you are huh ?? Cause you just may have a limited scope of what you study, right ???

I think they call those people PHDs      🙂

Anyway, to broaden ones field or scope one has to include the peripherals into their world. Really what depth does one have if limited in comparitive examples.

And there is the rub for so many of us….eclectic we say. Chooooosy. picky….we have staaaaaandards…

bottom line ?? some interesting clues may be slipping by…. And us researchers are ALL ABOUT CLUES.

For example, there is a very interesting escargot on eBay right now. Stamped Thomas E Wilson ( sporting goods ) with a V top and made of a brittle 'pot' metal. Been watching for a few weeks as it comes and goes. Listed, then relisted.

Lots of stuff there for the taking and cheeeeeeap… but no takers—-whyyyyyyy ??????

ugly…..

shame on us…..
