whistles for sale

one of the best things going to keep whistle prices down is coming from an unlikely source it now seems !!!

The Post Office !!!

How is that we wonder ??

Well, what does one do when wanting to buy a whistle and a seller says that they only send by signed for delivery.

Well and good for the seller, as they are assured that their whistle gets to its destination and they don't have to worry about any claims.

However what is the cost ?? Hardly does anyone want to pay all the extra cost ( and it can be easily over 20 dollars US )

So, let's do the math….10 dollar whistle, perhaps 20 dollar whistle now doubles !!! Or a 40 dollar whistle now is 30% more !!! Not rocket science when you see a whistle for sale and it sits at a low price and then sells at a low price.

Interestingly we have bought hundreds of whistles in the last few YEARS and not one has gone missing.

The conclusion ?? We buy less. We watch postage.

identifying rare whistles and lures

wow, a couple of very interesting whistle pix were sent in recently. Well, more than a couple, but two we wanted to reflect on.

One was torpedo shaped and found in a dumpster !! After pix were sent and more pix — it was determined that it was actually a fishing lure !!! THAT was fun !!!

Then a round whistle from the Nazi era. Adjustable too like a dog whistle. 1930s ?? ( nah, we don't know everything )

What's the point ?? Where are we going with this ??

Send, in those pix !!! First of all we love seeing what we can't have     🙂

Second, it broadens all of our knowledge, because we pass it on to everyone out there.

Third, well can't think of another. Now… perhaps there is another reason…it get's you ( the public ) involved in the incredibly overlooked field of whistory ( the study of whistles and their background )

pix. pix, pix keep 'em coming…..

byu rare whistles

why buy rare whistles ?? They are going up in price for one thing.

But beyond that —————  for trading of course !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BETTER than baseball cards ( well the card guys might beg to differ )

But really now, doesn't it double your ability to get a better collection ?? Think about it. You can only find different whistles on any given day and what if you go weeeeeeks without finding any ?? Or even mooooooonths !!!

In the mean time what if you come across some rare ones but they are duplicates ???

Scarf them up and write others about trading them and voila !! You have done a magic trick 🙂 — You just CREATED another way to find rare whistles….

Of course one has to network with other collectors and communicate — Oh, yech, did I say that ??? Sorry, reticence is the name of the game for most…..

but is it wisest ??

Happy hunting.

important rare whistles

what is an important whistle and why talk about it ??

a missing link…

When collecting, the objective is hazy as each one collects what they want to — granted. But for some it is more about whistory. The study of what is behind those whistles. Not always easy to track down is it ?? Perhaps you have visited the Whistle Gallery site just to do so ??

Well, join the hunt !!! So what makes a whistle important and what does that do to the value — and even further, the price ??

First, the importance. It can be weighed by whatever minor detail it brings to the table. For example a stamp that has never been seen before may reveal a manufacturer !!! Or it may be to supply a retailer or police force or ?? Perhaps a model never seen before. And that may open up a door as to other whistles not yet identified.

Then there is the value. — Who knows ?? If another collector spots it and you both want it, then the feathers fly and the price may skyrocket !!!

Notwithstanding, the price may remain very low. Why ?? No one else cares about what you are thinking is soooo important of a connection. But fine by you !! You are collecting and studying for yourself really.

Perhaps that is what being a connoiseur is all about….

whistle repairing

an unusual field of whistle collecting is the obscure pocket of broken and dented whistles that need repair. Why would someone repair a whistle ??

—– It just isn't the same dented or damaged is it ??

Some can be adjusted by hand. Some can be cleaned up and perhaps buffed. Gets the scratches out anyway. The difficulty comes with a polished whistle afterwards !!

Just note the seller on eBay trying to cash in on his pristine whistles and NONE are selling. However if they are very dented then you lose anyway. so why not try ??

Well, the reason is that they fall apart when unsoldered !!! Of course one can get pretty good at disassembling them and then putting them back together. Ya just have to have the motivation is all — kind of gutsy….

However, what if the whistle is very rare and you don't want to take a chance on losing it altogether ???

Well then, that's the rub isn't it ??

boatswain whistles

interestingly, boatswains or bosons or bosuns ( all nautical ) are an interesting section of whistles — why ??

Wel,l first because they date so far back into history they are hard to track.

Also, because they continue to defy logic on the prices they bring. Almost out of reach for most whistle collectors

Then, there is the variety of different nationalities on what constitutes one.

And what about those really weird ( but so great ) DRAGON ones from China ?? Now there's a boson !!! However there are soooo many ones that it defies catagorizing them too. Especially those tentacles that are sometimes on the bowls. Really love those.

Unfortunately they accordingly demand high prices. Just gonna have to bite the bullet and pick a really tentacled one and pay the price…
