rare whistles for sale

Yup, another show in Portland Expo Center is in another week.

We will be there all three days, selling off whistles. Some we have are duplicates. Some are triplicates !! Then there are all those we have picked up just for resale that we don't even keep for ourselves.

Not everything we see do we collect, yet may be someone does ?? If it is a whistle we look it over at least. Don't want to be a whistle snob right ??

We will have a whole section of cost only whistles. We pick them up for practical reasons. They bring people to the tables for one thing !! Besides that we like knowing that many boaters, hikers, walkers, joggers, shoppers hunters..( .the list keeps going ) all need whistles for safety and we supply them.

Then there are the bread and butter sales boards that aren't tooooooo expensive, collectable and have some very nice variety. Somthing that everyone can get into.

This year we are expanding to two more glass cases ( three total ) for all the rarer ones. Police, cycling, sirens, fire brigade, rare makers. These are not cheap,  granted, but gotta make the good stuff available too. Besides that,  everyone can get a chance to see the rarer whistles this way.

It helps to see what the more expensive ones top out at. After all they are a lot cheaper than corkscrews !!!!

C YA there ???

whistle picture pirating

harrrrr there she be, another whistle picture to steal !! Shiver me timbers — is it legal though ???

Well, using pix for ones personal use and review is one thing. But posting someone elses pictures without permission is a violation of copyright laws. In other words stealing what isn't yours to take or use. No different than what someone else has written. BUT you may say it is in the public domain !!! Not a correct application of that term unfortunately.

Harsh ?? Not really. Just fair play to the one who took the original picture(s). —– One can cruise the internet though and see pictures that have been pirated all the time.

Is it important ?? What are the draw backs ??

Some important information is hard to share if you can't copy and go over it together. But then again why should we be able to capitalize off somebody elses work ??

So some loss and some gain. In the end isn't it just plain a matter of honesty ?? —- One can always ask for permission right ?? OR even pay for it !!! Whoah !!!!

The important thing is to be careful not to take what isn't yours and use it for selfish profit now isn't it ??

It certainly makes it harder for us here at the Whistle Gallery when doing articles, but creating links is the answer for us. We can cross examine pictures and writing and just link over to another site–gives credit where it is deserved and accomplishes research too !!!

collecting whistles

what is your favorite type of whistle ??

Beaufort
Escargot
Extractor
Boatswain
Police
Fire Brigade

Lots to choose from and many actually do become quite choosy. One friend collected only Boatswain. Specialization — why do we ?? Perhaps the same reason we collect whistles at all ( they are all special  right ? )

The question begs to be asked  … what do we not collect when it comes to whistles ?? And Whyyyyyyyyy ??????

For everyone the motivations are different of course, but there are some similarities to consider. Like what we might ask ?? Well let's look at merely ONE thing… the chase….it is in camouflage below other driving forces….

Perhaps we identify ourselves by what we pick ??
We find comfort in obtaining a buffer against the world ??
Or maybe dip into immortality with those ageless whistles ??

Buried below is the excitement called the thrill of the kill when we track one down !!! The 'find of a life time' and it's dreaded counterpart — the dessimation of ego if we get duped into a dud !!!

Surprisingly there are a lot of antics involved in the chase and acquisition of a rare whistle. Ever really think about how you go about finding them ?? And what you do to get them ?? Buried even further below is anxiety

In a world where we want to be happy, do you ever wonder why we might risk living in such anxiety in the constant search for new game where at any time we can find ourselves precariously balanced between the two.????     …. I do…..

WHISTLE PATENTS AND DESIGNS

Notice the word patent stamped on your whistle ?? What does that mean and how does it work ??

Firstly, patents are applied for and granted. They also have a duration. Early on they lasted longer. Why is that helpful ??

Well, if a whistle has that stamp, then you know what years it falls into right ?? But not always is it that easy . For example you often see on scout whistles by Hudson the stamp patent and also the number Rd. No.540164 and that pertains to the registered design of the pillar top that they used almost exclusively on their scout whisltes. However the patent would be for whatever was patented, the two piece top dated 1908 or the diaphragm dated 1898, or whatever it was for. That is important for your starting point.

This dates the whistle to either 1898 to 1912 or 1908 to 1922. You remember that the patent at that time was good for 14 years– this was set because of the length of two apprenticeships and continued to be so till 1919. Then it was lengthened to 16 years and later even further to 20 years.

The point being that if you found any circa 1900 whistle with a stamp of patent on it you could safely assume that it was dated from that patent date to 14 years later. However, don't confuse it with registered design dates.

So the next thing to do is look closer at the construction to date its start.

whistle patent history

looking back in time about patents one wonder where they got their start. Perhaps unavailable to really know, it does seem that the UK has the earliest history dating back to circa 1500 !!! The earliest times were somewhat corrupted in who was granted what.

Not only that but there were monopoly/patent problems involved. However, that was finally dealt with and patents became set at 14 years. — the length of double apprenticeships as mentioned already.

However everyone wanted to get their fingers in the pie and again things got bogged down.

Thought you might like to read a brief piece by Charles Dickens ( well brief for him anyway )

A Poor Man's Tale of a Patent

It addresses in a humorous way the uphill battle it was then….

Later, improvemts helped spur on the indistrial revolution. Who knew whistles would be in there, but they are !!!!

rare whistles

You are going to think this a dumb one, but I LOVE my dry erase boards !!!

Have 'em in my whistle office and boy do I use them to death !!!! Great for memos while thinking of them, they are always up front and visible so I don't erase till I do or change something.

Great for seeing new ideas. I also use them for doing research — especially LINK diagrams — which really helps visualize connections between makers, dates, parts and such.

One can have several projects going at the same time. Sometimes dividing bulky ones or combining others.

Cheap too !!! We just went to HOME DEPOT here and for 15 dollars got a whole 4X8 sheet !!! Then we cut it down and voila !!!! We use lots of colors too for seperating ideas. Maybe I will use them for collating my notes this week !!!

They really need that bottom lip though to hold the markers.

Finally threw out the bulky large pens and bought slim line skinnier ones — really glad I did that.

Kinda OCD huh ??

Oh Yeah !!!!!

finding rare whistles too

Now that we have talked about geography and travel and expenses and time >>>>>>  In other words the contrast of hunting for rare whistles on foot or by sitting stationary and watching them march by — the question begs, why the internet ???

Because in a way they come to you !!!! What a concept !!!! The more people that you contact that sell whistles, the more that you will see. And that equates to variety and quality of which you likely won't come across at a garage sale, antique store, etc.

Consider that we had 25 whistles after 25 years and now with the internet we have over 1000. Yes we are selling them off constantly as we grow and change and that means we would have a lot more !!!!!. As our research grows we redirect and actually have to trim DOWN.

BUT,  how that could be done if there wasn't a constant flow of whistles ?? Couldn't.

Did you note that point earlier in this blog ??………….contact >>>> write,IM,text, email, write, phone…………

beaufort whistle

wow, got an old Dixon beaufort in the other day and still marvel at it, days later…..

No big deal I suppose for most, but to a whistle geek the world !!! Why you ask ?? It trills when blown !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No pea like in an escargot !!! Now that's news !!! How'd they DO that anyway ?? Just the right angle for air to pass through the holes ???? Perhaps the PARTITION is just loose enough to rattle inside the cone shaped body ??

Well, anyway, besides that is has a fantastic round cast mouthpiece and that's another unusual thing as Dixons aren't known for having them. Now I have to go through all the beauforts I see and have pictures of and re-examine them for possible mislabeling !!  OOOOH !!! I'm excited !!!

Back to the drawing board 🙂

finding rare whistles

How much does traveling to find whistles pay off ??

Depends where you live !!!

We live on the west coast of America. Probably 200 years old at best. Not much history of whistle makers here !!! And believe me whistles do not travel much to areas here. For many years ( many ) we tried to find them in antique stores and found very few. In fact we have 3 original whistles from our first 25 we found before going viral on the internet.

1) Purina dog chow dog whistle
2) Faurot police issue
3) BGI made 601 bullet

The rest have faded by comparison and are down the road now. These are nostalgic. Even the bullet is for sale cause we 'upgraded' which we do all the time now. Or just get out of and sell off.

The east coast might be better hunting grounds, but we're talking a vast coast line. Perhaps again, the northeast area where some early manufatirers were located might bring better results. Still LOTS of traveling and at almost 4 dollars a gallon, THAT could pay for a lot of whistles. Not to mention the time involved.

Boy o boy, to live in the UK and go to those boot sales and antique fairs !!!!! Or Germany and the antique shops ??  Wow, what finds could be there. Not too big of an area to travel thru. Besides the antique stores.

What about France ??  — again, terrific hunting grounds at fairs. Argentina, I don't have a clue. Seems that antiques are just looked at as OLD STUFF in many places. So hunting on foot might really pay off, but much harder work !!!.

All in all, foot work is arduous and time consuming as well as easy to fall short. Prices might be a whole lot better ( or worse ) but the best source is turning out to be the internet. WHY IS THAT ??? Seems like the prices are higher — oh really ???? CONSIDER…..

No fuel costs
No labor loss ( hunt at ease )
No wear and tear on your car
No lodging fees

When you pencil it out buying over the internet is the best deal going !!!!

whistle blog

As the numbers keep climbing on the website, one wonders how many afficianados are out there ?? Are the hits from collectors or sellers ?? In which direction should the website go ?? You should have a say really. Otherwise we here are not helping at all and we do want to help the field grow.

So…

Feel free to write in. To where ?? The commenting is disabled to to all the 'bots' spamming us. However you CAn go to Facebook and comment there !!! It's a back door that is in the front now  🙂  Cool huh ??

We have a list of to do things that are 5 deep right now for the site, but we can always add new ideas. Suggestions for SPOTLIGHTS  are also welcome and may be a fresh perspective from a newbie collectors point of view or from a veterans point of view.

Our specialized collecting may be too narrow for you and of no help !! We collect metal only and no tin ( mostly ) But there is a much bigger whistle world out there !!!

The long and short of it is that we write  from the school of hard knocks that we have experienced in the last five years of intense study and collecting. Beyond that we are always prying into new areas of research.

Perhaps there is insight you can pass on ??
