police whistle

my -father's -cousin's -uncle –knew this guy who was a policeman and he used this whislte for years. Wow, really ??

A genuine police whistle ?? OMG !! …. What's wrong with this picture ?? ( what if it was a bosun, that would be a hoot, or should I say toot ?? Or a dog whistle, or slide whistle….. ad infinitum….. ?? )

Technically nothing. It could be totally true !!! Well, all the connections anyway. BUT What makes a police whistle such ??

A stamp, don't ya think ?? Something to show it was issued to a particular police force.  Stamped in production —– from the whistle company. ( I suppose it could even have been engraved afterwards of production. )

However, to get right down to it, there needs to be some form of pedigree. So…..

City, County, Burgh, Borough, Shire, Name of force, Name of City, the exception being a Police/Fire generic stamp —  in all its variations —  at least says POLICE on it !!! . ALL OF WHICH POINT TO THE POLICE FORCE THAT ISSUED IT. Now things have been elevated when it comes to collecting don't you think ?? No longer saving a whistle due to sentimentality alone, but because it was issued —–perhaps even numbered for them.

Is this toooooo anal ?? Toooooooo picky ??       …….hmmmmm…….

No different with fire or fire brigade whistles — right ??

Mental hospital whistles.

Scout whistles.

Military whistles

*************All of these need identification ON THEIR OWN MERIT !!!!!! ***********************************

Why all the hubbub, bub ?? Collectability of course. Categories. There are parameters now. An outline to work within.

Probably good at this point to give some thought to an iconic name now ??  — The Metropolitan Police whistle….

nah….tomorrow……

postage

nothing bugs me more than postage costs when buying international these days.

Have you paid attention to the spread ?? Getting a good deal on a whistle can be blown out of the water from one simple phrase – SIGNED FOR DELIVER !!! Yeah, I know, it guarantees that the buyer got the item, I know. AND that of course that means a lot when it is an expensive whistle and you as the seller don't want to get burned. ( Paypal is often used and they will take your money from you if the buyer complains about not getting the whistle — truthfully or not )

Whatever….

All I know is that I can buy a whistle for 10 dollars and then pay 20 dollars for the postage —  if I don't ask or read th fine print GRRRR…..

Now order a whistle from France and what caveat emptor is there to watch out for ??? — COLISSIMO — the top quality postage that is reeeeeeally expensive.

And what are the REAL costs ?? hmmm….. let's look at them….

1) bubble wrap envelope and postage from anywhere in the USA – 2 bucks !!

I buy the envelopes at Walmart for dirt cheap.

2) Anywhere else short of Australia, China etc. — 4 bucks !!

3) France 6.5 Euros

4) UK 3.3gbp

5) ?? ASK !!!!

options ?? signed for ( as we have noted ) insurance, over night –well who does this and collects very many whistles anyway ??? Try 500 whistles multiplied by postage costs for all 500,  well you get the picture right ?? ——- it's WORTH the risk over all to skip the extras !!!!!!!. Unless you get a real rarity of course.

Sooooo what to do ?? ASK ahead.OR DON'T BUY !!!!  It If you don't, the postage can really accumulate for an avid collector like you and me.

Personally I have had 2 whistles go missing in the last 2-3 years and they weren't much to worry about, so I told the seller not to worry about it either. One STILL refunded the money !! WOW look what kindness does ??

Watch your backs my fellow aficianados, postage and well,  Paypal fees….we'll get to that another day….

travel time

time for a pilgrimage again. One more try in California for a whistle sale. Last time we bombed. After spending two days driving ( ten hours each way ) and doing it in a weekend, we netted a grand total of 300 dollars !!!

Not the way to make a living is it ?? Not even worth it for a hobby I might add. However it might be worth it for another reason….. Ground floor… starts at the bottom.

You see that starting from nothing has its drawbacks,— but ya gotta start there on a new hobby. Such a wonderful new hobby has to catch on and a little slow at first is acceptable losses one might surmise.

And that affects our growing collections too. Just might have to kiss a few toads before you get to the prince or princes, when buying whistles. Yeah, nobody likes to waste money, but there is a definite learning curve !!!

As one's taste improves, there is the inevitable culling and rotating out. Some for cheapness that irritates you, some just because you are getting your sea legs and your taste changes.

Looking back on my records I see that in the last 5 years whistles have across the board DOUBLED in prices.

That's a pretty good investment if you consider that this happened right through the recession !!!

NOW perhaps only making 300 dollars is not soooo bad AND is great advertising AND a profit to boot !! In fact we are thinking of going to Denver now for another antique ( and whistle ) show !!! Why not see where these little whistles will take us ??

interesting that in just two days of having a counter on the site we have had over 300 hits …..hmmmmmm….is that a whistle I heeeeeeear……

plating

finally broke down a few weeks ago and decided to deal with several whistles I have that were CHROME plated. Sorry, but couldn't stand it any longer and wanted to either take the plated finish off or smash them to pieces !!! So what did I have to lose ?? Nothing …

I had a couple Police issues prior to 1900 and although old and worn – including the lettering, they were taken in by the owner and had them chrome plated., doubtfully by electroplating,  none the less plated and VERY shiiiiiney — yech !!! Isn't that weird ?? Obviously worn prior, yet plated ( for corrosian ?? nickle silver ????  Really ???) and now they were artificially shiiiiiiiney. The travesty for me is/was that they were nickle silver underneath and I LOVE nickle silver.

So what to do ?? I took them to a 'chrome shop' across the bridge and they threw them in the pot using reverse electroplating ( electro-un-plating ? ) and voila !! The whistle was back to its original nickle silver self !! Well sorta…the side effect is that they are a very shiney nickle silver now — almost chrome looking.

Now, you might wonder what I gained ?? Nothing. Everything. The satisfaction of knowing I guess. For us with OCD or if you have it real bad then CDO,  as my daughter tells me, —- it is a burden lifted. Besides that, I don't have to ever see any flakes of chrome coming off by the windows, as it sometimes does right ?????? Are you with me ????

Matter of opinion I suppose…. Recently got in a 6 piece early Auld escargot — smallest of the three sizes and YUP — chrome plated — now I gotta wait till I have another or even couple more to make it worthwhile to take in. Cause they don't do it for free ya know !!

Really don't mind at all those brittania plated round whistles much. Not nickle silver underneath is why — who cares about brittania ?? Now, if it was pewter, but of course can't plate pewter, so why worry ??

cleaning

How far do I go with cleaning ?? Asked by a collector I thought to give it a little extra thought….

I never would fail to clean a whistle. Why you ask ?? Good question πŸ™‚

We should always clean everything we own is the no brainer here. However what is clean ??

Well, first has to do with germs don't ya think ?? All one needs is a little bleach in some water. If your clothes turn white you probably went too FAR !!!! And if it burns well, you know πŸ™‚ However ya really need to address those germs. YOU might want to blow that whistle or your kid or ?? I know ya don't want to give it any thought, but the more it has been blown the more SPIT went through it huh ?? I know — YECH !!! Saliva…….

So you might want to even soak it over night….

Next what about corrosion ?? Light rust, dirt etc. A toothbrush and clean water works well and does NOT STRIP !!! Patina is everything to some collectors. We need to all respect that to a point I suppose. Especially in the brass realm. Maybe take a small dental tool or whatever and clean out the fur balls that have accumulated ?? Test it then ?? Of course…der !!… If it doesn't work is it really a whistle ?? Gotta make a sound, so you might have to tweak it a bit. Careful to use flat tools though !!! Tools with teeth leave teeth-marks different than the teeth marks on the whistle that are "supposed" to be there !

Next, do I strip it ?? Well is it so corroded that you can't see it ?? Perhaps. If so, then it is a personal decision, but one that needs to be made. Try this … WAIT !!! I know, you just got it in and want to really fix 'er up. BUT if you wait, then the decision is sooooo much easier to make. After a while it may grow on you OR you may just hate the looks. NOW you will KNOW what to do.

What if it is nickle silver ??? hmmmmm have to address ( or undress ) that later dudes….

rarity

back from the weekend and been thinkin….what's all the fuss about rare whistles ?? In fact what is rare ?? I guess beyond the obvious is that there is a synthetic rare and a de facto rare.

Let's break it down. First synthetic might be created. How might that occur with a whistle ?? First one that comes to mind is the WINCHESTER 1806 escargot !!! Yup, stamp that on a whistle and there is a clamoring for it because of all the Winchester collectors. Demands 300 dollars or more. And voila — rare is created. On the other hand the model 1807 Winchester GSW, which is truly rare, costs even more as we saw earlier this year on eBay. ( a really low quality tube whistle by the way )

Interestingly enough, the 1806 is very well made by an unknown manufacturer ( possibly German and yes you heard it here first ). It followed earlier designs with different stamps and when it came out in production, it was already improved upon. Earlier and rarer stamped examples of rougher construction with Wilson, or Referee ( upside down circa 1916-20 ) and other stamps were made. But now the conundrum occurs. WHICH is the whistle collector going to search for ?? The one in demand — or the one actually rarer ?? OUCH !!! What to do ??

Really a wrestling match isn't it ?? Do I collect the Winchester escargot, and especially the OTHER model, 1805, because of the different number and pay TOP dollars for it ?? It amounts to $300.00 for the 1806, $400.00 for the 1805, $500.00 for the 1807.

OR do I buy THE EXACT SAME ESCARGOT WHISTLE WITH THE STAMP REFEREE on top –  the right side up stamped version circa 1922.for under 5 bucks !! THE 1807 IS A CLONE OFTHREE OTHERS KNOWN — EXACTLY THE SAME WHISTLE BUT EASY TO FIND STAMPS !!!!! Another 5 bucks. Oh my, I have just spent 10 dollars πŸ™‚

What are we examining here?? Do we collect for the design, sound, use….or because we are chasing what we are told is collectable ????????

Remember the story of the kings clothes ??

gender and the senses

5 years now intensely collecting whistles. Curiously, there seems to be a dearth of female collectors ??

Is it the same in other collectables ?? Why are there so few women into whistles. What is wrong with them ??

Perhaps nothing at all…. Perhaps we are looking at the wrong side. What's wrong with the guys ??????

Why do we collect anyway  ?? Some would say that it is to educate themselves on history. Perhaps. Another says it elevates them in how they feel about themselves, —- sort of a sense of self importance through the objects they find. — In other words I AM that certain rare and valuable whistle and vicariously it has made me into a better person !!! Pretty subtle psyche stuff going on here, huh ??

No doubt looks have an impact, especially with design and such, So there is VISION. Can't SMELL 'em  can we ?? There is a tiny bit of TASTE involved when you blow it of course….

One big time collector said " I go by feel when I pick a whistle" —  quite interesting when you think about it. A whistle is a sound instrument ( for HEARING  ) and yet it is the tactile approach ( TOUCH ) that attracts some. And what kind of feel ?? Well, he went on….heaviness or weight, usually including size. Maybe smoothness ??

Weird when you give it a little thought… maybe we shouldn't go here very far…..starting to creep me out….

to bosun or not to bosun – crossovers

Boy, can those bosun whistles get spendy or what ?? Ya just don't see very many bargains on those do ya ??

So, a decision is calling out to me. Do I cross that bridge and get into them ?? True, they are whistles and we do look for whistles and…well, yeah every reason to do so.

However, there is that price tag. For the 'less to do'  ones like me and you,  it means a commitment of money to get to the good ones.

This seems to be the case with CROSSOVERS  doesn't it ??

Corkscrews

Compasses

Knives

Extractors

Cylcing

Police

Fire

Yeah, I think we all get the point. In the whistle realm there are all those CROSSOVER attachments, but of course, as they were made for their use !!! So, how serious is the whistle world ?? Not very much apparantly as we typically pay low πŸ™‚

Perhaps one day we too will make the opposition shudder…

texting

do you text message or even instant message??

Many are adverse to it. You see that the 'younger crowd' is prolific at it. And you ask yourself — WHY ?? …. Not me, why should I.

The answer ??? >>>>> you can be socially connected without actually admitting to it !!!

Yah, you get a text message and then you decide when to reply. That control keeps you at a distance and yet,  in a conversation. Best of both worlds, huh ??  Oh, I know you already are at a distance,  ergo the electronic device. But let's take a closer look.

Let's say you are at work and actually in the very next work booth, you could stand up and look face to face  — Why might you still text your friend ( it happens a LOT !! ) ?? Almost like a 'slinky toy' conversation πŸ™‚ Streeeeettttch it or condense it – your call !!!

…..you gain  >>> time, distance, privacy, thought, control……wow, the advantages just goes on and on don't they ?? A LOT different than a phone call right ?? Or God forbid, a personal face to face visit !!! Really, quite a different animal altogether now isn't it ??

However  many times those texts are abbreviated messages. Instead of crafting those 'conversations',  till they are just right, explaning, clarifying them, attaching pix, they are condensed so as to get right to the point and can even be quipped toooo short by accident !!

One wonders what this has to do with whistles ?? Good question….emails

Do we hesitate to write to other collectors ?? Are we afraid to connect ?? Fear not, control is the key…..

If you really want to learn about whistles, ya gotta CONNECT….. even if it is with two cans and string.

blog spammers win, sorta…

what is a bot ?? Something that has to be contended with if one has a blog – that is for sure. In fact we now do not allow commenting on our blog — specifically for that reason. We were muscled out.

Here's their motive as per wikipedia:

Adding links that point to the spammer's web site artificially increases the site's search engine ranking. An increased ranking often results in the spammer's commercial site being listed ahead of other sites for certain searches, increasing the number of potential visitors and paying customers.

So, after battling them with blog spam blockers and having loan pimps bombarding our site several times a day, we shut off the commenting. Yeah, LOAN adverstisers of all the spammers are the worst. You can't get them to stop.

You can email us if you want, but nobody gets to see all the activity that the site is generating.

read and weep…
