antique whistle talk

wow, the great weather has brought out the collectors !!! Super time yesterday the first day at the antique show in Portland !!!

So much fun face to face πŸ™‚

Not sure what we talk about more, whistles or history behind the whistles — or is it a package deal and that is what is addicting ??

Side note–saw a revolutionary era ( 1700s !!! ) whistle on eBay today. Well they wrote 'it is believed to be' — way cool line huh ?? I guess now if you believe, it is almost as accurate as if it actually is so ?? — be careful when you buy !!!!!

Turns out it was another BGI round pewter whistle made about 100 years later than they advertised — but hey, probably sells better saying it is Babylonian or such, right ??

Well that is part of why we put up the website — easy research ( if wanted )

Other side note…. been thinking ( I know, dangerous ground ) what to do for our anniversary…. How about another SPOTLIGHT bonus ?? Hmmmm….. what could we post ??

How about one on the 20th ( that is mid way this anniversary month ) we post another ground breaking SPOTLIGHT ?? Very little has been posted on Amercan whistle manufacturers huh ??

OK then, there you have it….that is what we will do —- stay tuned……

civil war whistles

so it makes one think….were any whistles used in the civil war ?? Are reinactors using them today ??

The reason one wonders is that 1870 seems to be a threshold for whistles.

In the UK Yates put out a catalog of whistles in 1870, but before that ??? Well, Richard Porteous decades before – the Field Pipe, certainly for the military.

In the USA who made whistles prior to 1870 ??

True there is Banks and Brother ( Thadeus and Samual ) who invented the dual tube, thinwall. — 1864 ( right in the middle of the civil war time.

Perhaps another patent here or there.

However enough to supply the civil war ???

Perhaps wooden ones or horn or ???

Causes one to e-examine what was assumed. No other major whistle came on to the scene in the USA until 1881 when the BGI 601 bullet for hunters and the Bean police.

gotta look into this further huh ?? Your thoughts ??

civil war whistles

been really busy putting things together for the spring show and wow it really is spring early !!! 60 degrees already !!!

But during this time it comes to mind…what is a Civil War whistle ??

Seems simple yeah, but is it ??

As soon as someone puts it in a book, it is so correct ??

Like the BGI pewter and even lead round whistles that are pictured and then repeatedly promulgated as Civil War whistles ???

The problem is that those whistles were made 13 years after the war ended in 1865 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmmm……..

antique whistle sale

Next weekend is the Portland Expo Antique show in Portland, Oregon.

Always a blast to talk to so many about WHISTLES !!!!

Police whistles head the list this year. Unusual for us in that since they are so popular and we try to widen out most of the time.

Next is our efforts to use antique whistles with antique whistle chains and create jewelry.

Then there are SPORTS whistles.

Lastly safety whistles.

Surrounding all that will be a variety as  best we can bring.

Admittedly we had at one time thought that we would sell exclusively on the net and not deal with the public. Wow, not fun at all !!

Turns out lots more fun and personable to talk and feel whistles face to face. Sure it takes some time.

Maybe it is like rock music. The bands have to go on the road to be able to be heard and then sales are great for their recordings ??

Such is the burden of being rock stars…..

antique whistle age

patina is always an interesting subject, I guess because it is so subjective πŸ™‚

Watching on eBay there has been a run of whistles by a seller lising them as 'superb' and they are all cleaned and shiney and polished up.

They also have been very slow to sell. — Why ???

Perhaps because in the antique business people want age. However in many antiques dents and scratches are acceptable. Whistles are more like old coins though, we want them old but not worn.

Oh well, want, want, want. In the end just not polished up. Polish off all that patina and mostly the whistle is ruined. The exception being if you have to repair it, then you pretty much have to start over and hope the patina catches up quickly πŸ™‚

Favorites ??

nickel silver when it has that silver, but shightly yellowish and cloudy look.

Copper. dark brown but without any green corrosion ( verdigree might be acceptible)

brass, dark brown but dark golden is great too

silver, dark grey

chrome — none

nickle plated over brass–tough one. Not much of a patina, but I will take what I can get ???

Then there is wood, horn, hoof, etc. love that old oiled, darkened, look and feel after the color has changed hue from fresh and shiney to faded and old starting at about 100 years old !!!

even the word patina sounds better huh ??

cleaning antique whistles

Should you restore your antique whistles ?? YECH !!!! Well maybe, but when ??

When you have nothing to lose !!!! If damaged and you can retrieve it then go for it !!!!

Then again maybe it is tooooooo important to lose, even broken, then what ?? Nothing, just gotta bite the bullet and live with it, unless you find another !!

but what about juct cleaning ?? What can you use ??

well patina is another subject but in the mean time, try a brass brush….weirdly simple…..

patina…. ….hmmmm….tough subject…….

seeing into antique whistles

recently we talked about using magnification to see inside whistles to see their 'innards'

But you can't see without light right ??

But the hole is so small and when I look into it my head blocks the light !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't help it if you have a big head, but there is a way around it…

Get a small light πŸ™‚

Yup, a pen light would be great. One you can actually point inside the window and that's what windows are for anyway right ?? To let the light in ??

Here is what I did ( a real trade secret never before let out….well maybe, but still kinda cool )

Found a dentist fiber optic cable light–you know what I am talking about ??

It was in an old dentist chair and I had to free it but it worked. — get this …250 watts of light !!!! ZOWEE!!!!

Pokes right into the window ( night or day I might add ) cause it is pointy like a pencil.

And then every little secret inside that whistle is reveeeeeeealed.

In fact it has a dimmer !!!! Way cool.

Now what would work for you ???

The point is that extra light pointed right can really help your study subject.

The further point is, well it needs to be pointed or at least pointy-ish

whistles on eBay

not much going on with eBay on antique whistles these days are there ??

Oh, sure lots of talk about how rare, or special, or vintage or whatever will sell their whistle. But really ??

So what to do when nothing is going ??

Surf for other auctions !!

But surf πŸ™‚

The more you look at, the better to spot what many miss.

Am I shooting myself in the foot. Perhaps, but more activity is more activity and that means more will surface !!!

Can't imagine how many whistles are just sitting in some drawers all around the world and neglected.

However as the hobby grows we will surely see more–been happening already hasn't it ??

magnifying rare whistles

Are your eyes as bad as mine ?? Or is it hard to see those small letters at times?? Or even inside the windows at the innards of your whistles ??

Then you probably need help ??

That is where magnification helps.

But what kind ?? There are a lot of types and some are a waste of money aren't they ??

Plastic is usually a far cry away as it scratches πŸ™

And magnifying glasses that are on stands are great looking at but not through, the stands can get in the way of the glass or be at tough angles it seems.

I really like those large old metal ones that swing around and are attached to the table with a spring lifted arm. The doughnut shaped light under the hood is strong and right on the whistle —– hands free. Well at least free to hold the whistle πŸ™‚

Then again one always needs a portable, hand held onewith or without a handle and even a couple of different shapes or types are great. The optical higher end capability is really needed for all those small things to see.

Those little ones on a stand seem to be more looks than function.

Lastly my favorite is the headset. Just a simple binocular type optic headset that is rather cheap turns out great !!

However one day I would like to step up to a double or triple magnification … you know, like the surgeons use in those TV shows and movies…..someday

collecting antique whistle tools

what are antique whistle tools ??

interesting question huh ??

They aren't antiques !!!

Tools of the trade though. Small ones at that too πŸ™‚

Flashlights, magnifying glasses, piks, trays, brushes wow — who knew ??

what works best and what is a waste of time and money ??

interesting thoughts — what do you think ?? What has worked for you ???

hmmmm….
