selling antique whistles

well, it's not too early to be looking to the next whistle sale. To be held at the Portland Expo Center in March ( 6th,7th.8th )

Hundreds of whistles — all metal of course, cause that is all we do. We will be highlighting POLICE whistles this year. We also got a great purchase of 1950 German POLIZEI issues, with four variations. They will probably go quickly as the price is great and no postage costs !!!

Of course we are working class people so we will bring what we have and can afford —not the best and not the worst — in what ways ??

Not the best cause we keep them all ?? No, not at all !!! There are always 'doubles' and we always sell those off. Plus we buy all the time great whistles we come across, just to pass on to collectors looking for variety.

Helps to keep the interest up, as you never know what you will find.

On the same hand is the fact that we can't afford the best. Let's say some very fine bosun whistles, carved ivory whistles, asylum whistles, fire brigade,  the rarest police whistles and the list goes on and on — we don't have any either so don't feel bad if you don't have any of these !! Yet we remain hopeful like you.

Guess we are mostly middle of the road collectors all looking for a 'good deal' — just trying to grow and learn.

On the other hand many whistles are overlooked and we constantly buy to educate ourselves and to also sell to those wanting to learn. Yes, we get 'passed up' all the time by those gaining an educated eye ( and pallet ) But that is why we do this, so that you grow past us !!! The best teachers have their students surpass them.

Now that is success….

rare whistles – how many to collect ??

here is another thought to help in 'thinking shrink'

You can't shrink what you don't have !!

So you have to have enough collected to cut your collection back….Der !!!

In other words a collection has to grow first. THEN look at what to weed out, refine or even change.

—- another quote from the computer world…."Simple designs often come after the project has been running for a while".

Gotta have not just whistles, but knowledge, then rational decisions can be made. Sure there may be a dollar loss, but that comes with the territory of education. Like paying for a class, only a LOT cheaper if thoughtful about what is purchased.

Yeah, you might kick yourself for taking a class you don't like, but who knows what will be learned after all ??

think shrink….

refines, upgrades, improves circulation, educates, connects…

Wow !! Who knew ???

There are so many advantages to forcing yourself to think shrink.

Like excersize it keeps your collection healthy and active.

Keep thngs simple — what did Steve Jobs ( of Apple computers ) say about this ??

“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple…."

How does one 'go to market' to dump extra whistles ??

Well, antique stores buy them, there are antique fairs too, to sell to the vendors. Even set up a booth yourself.

How about on line auctions like Etsy and eBay and …

Trading works great too, like baseball cards.

You might be surprised how much any one of your whistles is wanted by another collector !!!

Even give some away to friends.

Think shrink.

On the other hand what does it mean that the collector is controlling the collection ??

Like a garden there has to be size constraints for most of us.

So, what comes with a garden ?? Weeds !!!

Yes, gotta weed out whistles regularly. Get rid of the culls. Perhaps move on to what have become more interesting subjects of studies

( don't forget to take lot's of pictures though so you at least have them if you find out late you should have kept some !!! )

Even the type of display or storage may help to keep your collection under control. Then again you can always upgrade your displays !!!

So it grows…but that is a choice, not submission.

Sell off. The more you sell off the more control you have. Even if you sell at a loss !!! Makes room and keeps the collection down.

Upgrades are great too, but then again gotta get rid of the extras.

So, like a garden you may have to go to market…

What would it mean that a collection is controlling the collector ??

Collects just to collect. Doesn't take the time to learn anything past the surface.

Collects and just moves to another, never e-examing what has been accomplished or taken in.

Will not set limits is a key.

Collecting comes before people.

That last one is a scary one to ponder……

How many whistles do you have in your collection ??

Now there is a question that could come off wrong.

Why ??

On the one hand it might seem that the amount reflects something to do with just hoarding.

Is it ??  Just hoarding ???

Let's give it some thought….

We're not talking muscle cars here. Not prestige ( well, I guess they could be ).

Like coin collecting, there is a lot to learn about and a great collection of whistles grows — spreading and contracting like a living organism.

So, perhaps CONTROL is more accurately the subject and is involved in what to strive for ??

Is your whistle collection under control or is it controlling you ??

Hmmmmm…..perhaps a few days thnking this one out….

collecting whistles

this thought of sharing seems counterproductive. On the one hand,  one has to really accumulate whistles to research them. Can't share them after that cause you need them to study further.

Then if you share them you are stuck without your references !!!

So what to share and how ??

Pictures are great to share.

Not only that, but writing observations that can be posted.

U tube videos are great.

Blogs are informative too.

Also comments on current websites.

Facebook, start a website…..

All these methods are growing —— and sharing of whistle info is snowballing.

*******************Should flush out a lot more on whistles in the future huh ?? *************************************

even commenting on sites like this one….well, probably not after all—SPAM  is killing off this avenue.

Sorry to say, but most of what comes in is people selling something and parasitically commenting in some generic way and then using the site to promote a product or service.

We need a 'work around' ………

whistle collector

wouldn't it be nice to change the thought — what do you collect ???

How about what interests you ?? OR what do you research ???

Yeah, that sounds better. Not a collector, but a 'researcher'.  or is it just semantics ??

Let's contrast the two. or perhaps they aren't so far apart ??

collector — gathers items ( let's say whistles ) — researcher gathers whistles AND information about whistles

collector — examines the parts — so does the researcher

collector — categorizes — same with researcher

collector files ( and displays ) his whistles — researcher files his information

wow, thought I was on to something there. Guess they are close to the same after all. Guess I owe an apology to all those hoarders.

….of course, not if anything isn't shared.. Is this an oxymoron ??

Hmmmm…….

USA whistle manufacturers

So excited had to tell someone. Really made a break through on research. Been trailing information for several years and finally landed on what I was looking for.

Should really help in a terrific SPOTLIGHT in the future.

But still, gotta add a few more researched facts to round it out.

Really could use a few more pictures too.

Perhaps a catalog.

Well, maybe in a year or so it will be ready.

Gotta plan ahead for each article ya know….

I guess I let the cat out of the bag too soon….. Wait it is still in the bag isn't it ??.
