whistle research

so what is a student of whistles ??

More than someone who learns something new like a whistle that one didn't know about but turns out is known about by many other collectors,  don't you think ??

There has to be a serious study done at some point. Nothing major, just well below the surface.

For example:

The innards… yeah the inside of a whistle. No not how it works….well maybe, bot more importantly the desire to look inside, take the time to do so and then record what you find. Like peeling an onion only not as caustic.

The payoff ?? You become an expert at identifying your whistles. Even better ??  ……..  You get to learn all about nuance

Now what is that ????

tomorrow….

researching old antique whistles

one of the most rewarding things about research is that when you dig into it, you find out things that you just couldn't see before. Happens all the time for us when doing the SPOTLIGHT research.

How might this happen to you though ??

Well, it is all about discovery and that only follows knowledge. Ironic iisn't it ?? To be after knowledge,  but new knowledge needs to have a foundation to build on to add up to anything.

In other words, it doesn't matter to talk about a roof if you don't know what it means to clear the land, to lay a foundation, to frame a house —– for the roof to go on !!!

What do you think the earliest knowledge might be ??

First is what is a whistle –DER !!! Next ?? What is it made of ?? Next, What kind do you like ?? Hold on now something just changed !!!!!

You are now making choices from what you learned – first time πŸ™‚ So now you can direct what you are going to learn.

Next you have to take in more by spreading out in your basic knowledge and again back to simple input…what kinds are there, who made them, what years , what uses….Plateau after plateau….

But here is where it drops off  —- unless you go deeper. Probably at this point you will start to become a student… ………………..scared ????   ………. a student ………

WHISTLES, COLLECTIBLE OR RARE OR ???

the real question that begs to be asked is what is a collectible whistle ??

If it is rare do I collect it because it is rare ?? If it is not rare might I be motivated to collect it anyway ??

What does one collect anything for ??

personal — always

resale — sometimes

How often do the two meet — now we ARE talking rare  !!!!!!

It would seem that we are driven by many complex reasons. How ever to cut right through everything we could ask if a whistle is not rare and/or  valuable what would motivate us to collect it ?? Certainly not value.

Perhaps just personal like say a whistle that we had when we were in the scouts – just like the one we found for sale or such.

Best case scenario ??  ………..To learn ………

buying rare whistles

where do I go to find rare, antique and collectible whistles you ask ?? — good question !!!

Everywhere !!! Nowhere !!!!

Now what does THAT mean ??

For the most part nobody notices whistles. When we sell at the antique shows the first thing that a person says is WHISTLES ???

the second thing they say is " who knew there were so many whistles ?? "

what do we learn from this ??

the field is wide open to collect AND that few will be selling them as a result. Oh, yeah, here and there someonw will have picked up on it and thankfully will be a small ( very small ) supplier, but for the most part you can still find whistles for a song at the most remote spots and trolling here and there..

HOWEVER…if you want a specific whistle that is different….gotta pay usually. —- Or possibly never see it come up for sale again. Can't say how many we have passed over, missed or whatever and then never see another come up for sale again !!!!

So at times one has to decide how badly they want that particular whistle ?? Is it really that important ?? OR is it really that desireable for you personally ( if it defintely is, then you will have no buyers remorse πŸ™‚  — So you may have to spend more to not let it get away !!!  We have many times and even then had it get away to someone with the same idea only MORE interested you might say !!! But that is OK on average to pay more, as the cheaper ones defintely average it out to an inexpensive hobby.

still….where does one find these rare whistles and what is the difference vetween rare and collectible ?? another good question ( or is it two ?? ) hmmmmm…..gotta give it some thought ……

whistle picture files

guess  we have exhausted this subject of whistle pictures huh ?? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Not yet πŸ™‚ —  what about MACRO ????

What's that for ?? >>>>>> gotta see inside as well as outside don't ya ??? In fact it begs to be said —

You can't get all the whistles you want even if you had the money. One hesitation and GULP — it is snapped up by someone else !!!!

SO, pictures are your frieeeeeends….and if they are going to do you any real good you need to get the    'look see'  at those parts as much as possible, so back we are to MACRO

Yup, seeing inside that always present window. The more you can see —–  the more you know about the maker.

How to see though ?? Squint a lot ??? Naaaaah, it's all about light now ( and forever )

hmmmm…..gotcha thinkin now, huh ??? ( tryin anyway )

rare whistle pictures

hope we aren't beating this subject of whistle pictures into the ground, but hey — it may be all you ever have of a particular whistle you have seen in a picture. We must have thousands of pictures from the internet now. Yet, we can't show them because of copyrights.

However, they do create a library for reference to. They can be organized into files. Indeed we have modeled the site after our own files, although much less cataegories πŸ™‚

What to look for is size. NO, not the whistle size this time, but the picture size !! Yah, sometimes you can go to your 'file' and the picture saved is soooooo small that you can't see the whistle — now that leaves a little to be desired – in fact everything to be desired YECH !!!! A THUMBNAIL picture !!!

Lot's more to think about than you thought about … huh ???

antique whistle pictures

why all the hub bub about whistle pictures ??

Travel !!!! Yah, most of us can't travel enough ever to find all the great whistles that are out there ( and there are a gazillion )

So, dependancy on pictures to find what one is looking for is a must.

That being said, here is a real caveat for you to make a mental note about. Better yet paste it on the front of your computer…..

Ready ???????

WHISTLE SIZE

WHAT DOES that MEAN YOU ASK ??  ………………………………………. precisely —– it means that little whistles can be made to look BIG inn pictures posted on your screen.

So when buying over the net —- MAKE SURE you ask this simple question >>>>>> How long is the whistle ???

You will love me for that one some day…..

antique whistle pictures

taking pictures of whistles has many hurdles. For example how do you use light correctly ?? Especially hard is dark patina next to shiney chrome.

What to do ?? Well I avoid chrome altogether myself, you decide from there !!!

Darker background helps somewhat. Some use all white. Then there are those shadow boxes.

And camera ??

Perhaps the best is just use a cell phone       πŸ™‚

What to look for ???

CLARITY — pixel count should be higher, then again there is difficulty loading them up and sending them.

Yeah it is a real battle…. hmmmm more thought ??
