Whistle Categories and Types
For both new and seasoned collectors, taking time to learn the accepted names for whistle categories (or “types”) pays off. Terminology evolves, gets refined, and sometimes needs to be “weeded out” as we reassess what we’ve collected and used over the years. For instance, we’re shifting from multi-chamber to multi-tube, since the chambers are inside the tube. Over the past two decades, we’ve built and maintained files organized by whistle type, sorting and defining each category as we go. Using this system, we’ve expanded our categories to a fairly set list—and it continues to help collectors (including us) cross-reference whistles within a dedicated “reference collection.”
Some categories are highly specific and labeled accordingly; others are simply too broad and are grouped for now (for example, “silver”). You may also notice what looks like a redundant folder structure—this is intentional, designed to make key sub-categories easier to spot. For example, “India” highlights primarily escargots, even though escargots also have their own folder, and buttons are separated again as well. As the saying goes, “Keeping things simple takes a lot of work!” (Makers aren’t listed as their own category on this page; there are only 36 maker files—for now.)
Spotlight Articles for Whistle Categories
We aim to publish Spotlight articles that eventually cover the full range of metal hand whistle collecting. The challenge is pace: at one article per month, it takes years to cover everything—and we’re still working at it. (Check back soon: we’re working on 40+ additional articles.) To date, we’ve written 160+ Spotlight articles featuring individual whistles and broader category groupings, all available to the whistle community free of charge.* (To be sure, an Index is now needed and forthcoming!)
